Polarity Therapy: A General Systems Approach

Dr. Randolph Stone, D.O., D.C., N.D., is the founder of Polarity Therapy. Dr. Stone studied and integrated diverse fields of knowledge including Osteopathic, Chiropractic, Naturopathic, and Ayurvedic Medicine as well as Gnostic Christianity, Alchemy, and Eastern Religions. He integrated his studies and practices into a unified vision of consciousness and healing that he called Polarity Therapy. His vision for Polarity Therapy was to create a body of knowledge that would integrate all the healing arts. He expressed it this way,

“For forty years I searched for a principle in the healing arts which would include all forms of therapy and act as a common denominator, an intelligent answer, to all the numerous contradictory theories and claims existing today.” (Stone, Polarity Therapy, Vol. I. CRCS, 1986, Book 3, pg. 1)

The importance of Dr. Stone’s search for “the intelligent answer” is echoed in modern science in the development of General Systems Theory. General System Theory was pioneered by Dr. Ludwig von Bertalanffy at the same time Dr. Stone was developing Polarity Therapy. Like Dr. Stone, Dr. Bertalanffy was born in Austria and immigrated to America. Dr. Bertalanffy was a biologist who looked for a unifying set of principles that would integrate all the sciences, behavioral sciences, philosophy, and art. His writings on General Systems Theory were similar to Dr. Stone, suggesting that we go beyond “numerous and contradictory theories” in the healing arts. Dr. Bertalanffy says:

“Modern science is characterized by its ever-increasing specialization, necessitated by the enormous amount of data, the complexity of techniques, and of theoretical structures within every field. Thus, science is split into innumerable disciplines, continually generating new sub-disciplines. In consequence, the physicist, the biologist, the psychologist and the social scientist are, so to speak, encapsulated in their private universes, and it is difficult to get word from one cocoon to the another…” (Bertalanffy, General System Theory. Foundations, Development, Applications, New York 1968)

Both Dr. Bertalanffy and Dr. Stone sought to find a common denominator to bridge and unify different disciplines. From a systems science paradigm, Polarity Therapy is a form of applied General System Theory. The following story of the elephant illustrates the differences between reductionist science and systems science. When reading the story think of the elephant as Polarity Therapy and the parts of the elephant as the healing professions Dr. Stone sought to integrate through Polarity Therapy.

A group of reductionist scientists were independently sent to study an elephant. The problem was that the scientists had no idea they were studying an elephant. One scientist was measuring the behavior of the foot, another scientist was measuring tail wagging velocity, and another was observing the chemical composition of a toenail. Each scientist was published in a separate scientific journal in their own discipline. They had no idea that their work was related because each was in their own specialized area.

One day, a scientist had a dream in which he saw the whole elephant. He saw the relationship of the parts to the whole and how they moved together.
